Phimosis is a condition found in infants and adolescents but rarely in adult males. In this condition the foreskin of an uncircumcised penis tightens to an extent that it becomes impossible to pull it back over the tip of the penis. Phimosis is mostly found in body between 2 to 6 years of age. If this condition persists beyond the age of 17 years, it might lead to complications and phimosis surgery may be required to detach the foreskin from the tip.
The symptoms of phimosis are :
Painful erection
Pain in the foreskin
Blood in the urine
Itching or soreness at the penis tip
Painful urination
Treatments for phimosis vary depending on the child and severity of phimosis. Treatments may include: gentle daily manual retraction, topical corticosteroid ointment application or circumcision.
Topical corticosteroid therapy: Our doctors recommend topical steriod ointment application for children with phimosis. This is an effective treatment in most males. These topical ointments are used to help soften the tight foreskin around the penis, so the foreskin may be easily retracted.
Circumcision: Male circumcision refers to the surgical removal of the foreskin. Circumcision is often not required for treatment of phimosis. In some rare cases urologist may recommend circumcision if the steroid ointment has failed to achieve the desired results.
