Diarrhea

Diarrhea is when stools are loose and watery. Diarrhea is a common problem. It may last 1 or 2 days and go away on its own. If diarrhea lasts more than 2 days, your child may have a more serious problem. It can be either a short term diarrhea or can be a long term diarrhea. When diarrhea lasts for 1 to 2 days we call it acute or short term diarrhea. When it persists for a few weeks then we call it a chronic or long term diarrhea. Short term diarrhea generally happens due to consumption of contaminated food or water. The long term diarrhea is mostly due to some disease like Irritable Bowel Syndrome or collitis.

Causes & Treatment

Diarrhea can be caused by either bacterial or viral infection. It can also be a result of food intollerace or allergy. There are certain medications, especially antibiotics like Augmentin and Doxycyclene that may cause diarrhea. Some of the most common end easily noticeable symptoms of diarrhea are:

Cramping

Abdominal pain

Swelling in abdomen

Fever and Nausea

Dehydration

In general conditions if the child is not responding to normal medicine then the child specialist may advise a stool test to diagnose if there is any bacterial infection.
