EP Studies is a test used to evaluate your heart's electrical system and to check for abnormal heart rhythms. This study is done by a Cardiologist on a Cath Lab. In this study, the doctor will insert a thin wire with electrodes through a vein in the groin region. The wire is then pushed right upto the heart. Once in the heart, the electrodes measures the heart’s electrical signals. Electrical signals are also sent through the electrodes to stimulate the heart tissue to try to cause the abnormal heart rhythm. This is done so that it can be evaluated and its cause can be found. It may also be done to help evaluate how well a medicine is working.
EP Studies are normally done for patients who have abnormally fast or abnormally slow heart beat. Not all cath labs are equipped to carry out EP Studies. Alwsys check with the centre whether they have the provision to carry out EP Studies.
The cost of EP Studies is in the range of Rs. 35-40,000 equivalent to USD 600 - 750. The test could be done in daycare meaning that the patient will have to be at the hospital for 8-10 hours. This procedure is done on a Cath Lab. Good quality Cath Labs from GE, Philips and Siemens cost in the range of USD 4,00,00 - 5,00,000.
This test is done by Cardiologists who have specialized in Electrophyiology studies. The number of doctors who specialize in EP Studies is much lesser then those who specialize in Angiography or Angioplasty. These are doctors who have done MBBS, MD (Medicine) and DM (Cardiology). The treatment for patients who have abnormal EP Study result is installation of Pacemaker or ICD.
