Jaundice is a condition in which the skin, eyes and mucous membranes turn yellow. This yellow color is caused by high level of bilirubin in the blood. Bile is fluid secreted by the liver. Bilirubin is formed from the breakdown of red blood cells.
Jaundice can be caused due to over production of Billirubin in the blood or due to blockage of the bile going into the intestine. The reasons for jaundice can be listed as :
Hemolytic Anemia
Hepatitis
Alcohol
Autoimmune Disorder
Gallstones or CBD Stone
The symptoms of jaundice can be fever, chills, abdominal pain, yellow coloration of eyes and skin, dark coloured urine, clay coloured stool etc.
Diagnosis of Jaundice is done by Physician through clinical examination, urine test, blood tests like CBC, Liver Function Test, Ultrasound or CT Scan of the Abdomen.
In adults jaundice does not require any specific treatment. However if the symptoms are severe then symptomatic treatment can be given. However if the jaundice is caused due to CBD blockage then MRCP test followed by ERCP needs to be done to restore the flow of bile from the liver to the intestine. If a stone is blocking the Common Bile Duct, then endoscope is used to crush the stone and extricate it. In cases where the stone cannot be crushed, a stent is placed in the CBD to bypass the blockage and ensure the flow of bile juice.
If alcohol is the reason behind jaundice, then abstinence would be a good choice to get over the disease. If jaundice does not get treated in time, it may cause damage to the Liver.
