360 Degree MRI

APG Hospital has installed the most advanced 32 Channel MRI Machine in Purnia, Bihar. Another revolutionary development which took place in MRI technology was 360 degree imaging. So far CT Scan was doing 360 degree imaging but MRI was only doing 180 degree scanning.

Whenever the patient would lie on the MRI table, a coil was put on top of the body part which was to be scanned. The MRI machine at APG Hospital has a coil embedded in the table. Now the data sent from the body is captured by coil below and the coil on top. This technology is highly useful in Brain and Spine MRI.

For years the development in MRI technology was focused on increasing the magnetic strength to get clearer images. The actual problem was in a different area - Human body gives analog signals which are captured by the coils and transmitted to a digitizer located almost 12 feet away. The digitizer could not be kept in the MRI room because as soon as the data is digitized, it is stored on magnetic medium which was not possible to be kept in the MRI room due to strong magnetic field.

Since analog signal loses intensity with distance, the need was to create a strong signal meaning higher magnetic field. In 2014 a new technology was developed whereby the digitizer after converting the analog signal to digital did not store it on magnetic medium but on optical cable. This brought the digitizer into the MRI room and now it is located just 4 cms away from the Magnetic coil. Thus the need to create 3 Tesla Magnetic field has become redundant and now the best MRI machines are coming with 1.5 Tesla Magnetic strength which gives very good Signal to Noise ratio.

There’s no special preparation necessary for the MRI examination. Unless our staff requests that you are not to eat or drink anything before the exam, there are no food or drink restrictions. You should continue to take any medication prescribed by your doctor unless otherwise directed. It is not allowed to wear anything metallic during the MRI examination so it would be best to leave watches, jewellery or anything made from metal at home. Brain & Spine MRI

The MRI of spine lets your doctor examine the small bones, called vertebrae, which make up your spinal column, as well as the spinal discs, spinal canal and spinal cord. MRI scans of the spine are needed when conservative treatment is not working and more aggressive back pain treatments (e.g. spinal injections or surgery) are contemplated to relieve the symptoms.

MR Angiography

When 3 Tesla MRI came the body imaging was the biggest casualty as the Signal to Noise Ratio was very high and therefore the doctors preferred CT Scan of the Abdomen over MRI but in the latest 360 degree MRI this problem has been overcome and now the MR Imaging of the abdomen has become the preferred diagnostic modality for GI Surgeons and Physicians.
